When To Prune
There is a common belief that tree pruning should be done in the spring and summer and not during winter
months, when actually this is not the case. Deadwood removal should be done in the summer when leaves are present to insure
definite ID of dead and dying branches. Light pruning (up to 20%) is acceptable in spring and summer but most live wood
pruning can be done in dormancy. After dormant pruning, the tree has the maximum time period to grow wound
wood, which seals off pruning cuts. Also, there are few (if any) insects or diseases active at this
time.
